I can’t believe it’s happened again. Okay, I guess I can believe it’s happened again, but I hate to admit it. Unfortunately, this is the world we live in. As law enforcement tries to figure out who did it, and why they did it, I remain in shock. For me, it doesn’t matter who did it or why they did it. For me, it only matters that they did it. They managed to take a holiday, and turn it on its head. There were literally thousands of people there, each living out their lifelong dream to complete the most coveted Boston Marathon. Then, in the blink of an eye, someone decided to ruin it all.

We Continue To Pray

Our prayers are with the victims of this senseless act of terror. As a company that delivers fun to children, we at All American Inflatables can’t understand how someone could willingly take the life of an innocent 8-year-old child. We continue to pray for the entire city of Boston.

The great thing about a time like this is that we are able to show the rest of the world what it means to be an American. We are no longer Republicans or Democrats. We are only Americans, standing together with our brothers and sisters in Boston. We will not allow the enemy (whomever they are) to tear us down. I watch in amazement as so many brave people go running in, even while bombs are continuing to go off. The first responders put their lives on the line to save others. Instead of focusing on the bad, I choose to focus on the good. There is soooo much good to be found in this country. No matter how hard they try, no terrorist can take that away!

Happy April Fools Day

April 1 marks one of my favorite days of the year. April Fool’s Day has long been one of my favorite days, mostly because I like the idea of having no social boundaries for an entire day. It’s a day when even the strictest of bosses has to look the other way when it comes to office pranks. Like the time I got turned in to my boss for pulling a prank on an older co-worker. Hey, I said, you can’t do anything to me, today’s April 1…okay it didn’t go quite like that.

So my co-workers got together and thought it would be a great idea if we pulled a prank on one of the guys that had been working there for years. Here’s the setup: one small woman hides in a recycling dumpster that is used as storage before paper is shredded. The storage container was supposed to be locked, but never was. She hid, and my job was to tell the co-worker that the lid was stuck and I couldn’t get it open. When he went to open the container, she was to jump out and scare him. All went exactly as planned, until she jumped out.

He got extremely scared, jumped back, clenched his fists, and got ready for a fight. We all had a great laugh and thought it was over, but he spent the next hour lecturing us about how people got hurt doing that kind of thing when he was growing up in Brooklyn. So, after an hour or being lectured (he never did report us to the boss), the life had been sucked out of everyone involved. It turns out, the joke was on us!

After that experience, I will never hide anyone in a trash can again. Mostly for my own livelihood. But hey, I suppose a good piece of scotch tape under a mouse sensor is still fair game.

Great 1st Birthday Party Idea

Thanks to my wife’s newfound obsession with Pinterest, my family has been enjoying a slew of delicious new recipes that are keeping the entire family happy. In fact, like many women, my wife’s now using Pinterest to plan birthday parties. Our youngest daughter recently celebrated her 1st birthday. We (and by we, I mean my wife) planned a “Pinterest Party.” Almost every detail of the party was found on Pinterest, and it was a big success. Southwestern Egg Rolls with Avocado Ranch:

What you’ll need for the egg rolls:

• 2 cups frozen corn, thawed,
• 1- 15 ounce can of black beans, rinsed and drained
• 1- 9 ounce package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry with paper towel
• 2 cups shredded mexican cheese
• 1- 7 ounce can diced green chiles, drained
• 4 green onions, finely chopped
• 1 tsp ground cumin
• 1/2 tsp chili powder
• 1 tsp salt
• 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
• 1 package of egg roll wrappers

Preheat oven to 425. Line 2 baking sheets with aluminum foil and spray lightly with cooking spray.

In a large bowl mix corn, beans, spinach, cheese, chile, onion, cumin, chili powder, salt, and cayenne pepper. Scoop a small amount of filling onto the wrapper. Starting at the corner, carefully start to roll the wrapper. When it’s slightly rolled, tuck in the two sides and continue rolling to the last point. Wet your finger with water and dab a bit on the corner to seal the egg roll. Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling, placing them slightly apart on the baking sheet.

Lightly spray the tops of the egg rolls with cooking spray and bake for 15 minutes, flipping them at least once during baking.

What you’ll need for the avocado ranch:

• 3/8 cup mayonnaise
• 3/8 cup sour cream
• 3 tablespoons buttermilk
• 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
• 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1/2 green onion, chopped
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 avocado, peeled and pitted

Place all ingredients in a blender and pulse until smooth. Use immediately.

In Remembrance

11 years ago to the day, almost to the minute, I remember waking up and getting ready to head off to school. My wife and I had a 2-year-old son and a 2 month old daughter. We don’t normally turn on the television in the morning, but for some reason my wife turned on NBC as she was feeding our daughter. She stopped me in my tracks and  told me I had to watch. As I watched, the second plane flew into the Twin Tower. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Although the media was saying that there was no indication of what had happened, it was clear to my wife and I that we had been the victims of a terrorist attack.

September 11, 2001

I decided I still needed to go to school, but nobody could focus. School was cancelled, and everyone was sent home. I remember being glued to the television along with the entire country. Wherever I went, people were watching television. Even at work.

Like many people, I didn’t know anyone directly related to the nightmare of September 11, 2001, although I had heard of people who knew people. But, like so many other people, it didn’t matter. The attacks of September 11, 2011 affected me halfway across the country, just like so many millions of others.

Today as we honor yet another anniversary, I am shocked to think that it’s already been 11 years. My daughter is now 11, and my son is now 13. Life has gone on, but I remember that day so vividly.

Today, as I remember the horrors of 9-11, I am extremely thankful to the men and women of our armed services as well as the police and fire fighters that put their lives on the line for my freedoms every day.
